IELTS Test - Details
  • Available in two modules - Academic & General Training
  • Academic module evaluates English for academic purpose and General training tests functional language for work
  • Four sub-tests: Listening, Reading, Writing & Speaking
  • Listening-40 Objective questions (30 Min. +10 Min to transfer the answer)
  • Reading- 40 Objective questions, 3 passages (60 minutes)
  • Writing- 2 Tasks: Task 1 - Letter/Report (150 Words) & Task 2- Essay (250 Words)- 60 Minutes
  • Speaking - 11 to 14 Minutes of interview with a trained examiner - Part 1- Introduction, Part2-Cue Card and Part 3- Discussions
  • Total score- 9 bands /There is no passing or failing in IELTS. 6.0 Bands and above is considered a satisfactory level
  • Listening-40 Objective questions (30 Min. +10 Min to transfer the answer)
IELTS Test Format

IELTS test is available in two modules namely Academic (AC) and General Training Module (GT). The academic module is for candidates willing to study at undergraduate or postgraduate levels and those seeking professional registrations. General Training module is taken by candidates planning to migrate to English speaking countries such as Canada, New Zealand, Australia or UK. In some cases candidates looking to study below degree level vocational qualification take the General Training module. IELTS test four language skills- listening, reading, writing and speaking. While listening and speaking remain common for test takers, reading and writing differ in Academic and General training module.

  • Task 1 (150 Words) - Report (Academic) / Letter (General Training)
  • Task 2 (250 Words) - Essay 60 Minutes

Test Registration

Scores and Validity

An IELTS score is generally valid for 2 years. However, certain institution may have their own validity for the scores. Each of the fours language skills are measured on a band scale of 9. There is no passing or failing and it just that the candidates need to demonstrate a required level of proficiency. Band 6 and 6.5 score is considered to be satisfactory band score.
