The GRE General Test is a computer-delivered test
The overall test time is about 1 hour and 58 minutes.

There are five sections:
  • The Analytical Writing section will always be first.
  • The Verbal Reasoning ( 2 sections), Quantitative Reasoning (two sections) and unidentified/unscored sections may appear in any order after the Analytical Writing section.

The skills measured include the test taker’s ability to analyze and evaluate written material and
synthesize information obtained from it, analyze relationships among component parts of sentences and
recognize relationships between words and concepts

Listening

The skills measured include the test taker’s ability to understand basic concepts of arithmetic,
algebra, geometry and data analysis and the ability to reason quantitatively.

Writing

The skills measured include the test taker’s ability to articulate complex ideas clearly and
effectively; examine claims and accompanying evidence; support ideas with relevant reasons and
examples; control the elements of standard written English; and sustain a well-focused, coherent
discussion.

The GRE consists of three sections: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. Each section is scored separately, and scores range from 130 to 170 for the Verbal and Quantitative sections, and 0 to 6 for the Analytical Writing section.

The GRE exam is required by most top universities in the US to study the MS program. For other universities it might be optional but usually preferred as an additional add-on to make your profile stand out from the crowd.

The GRE exam syllabus measures verbal reasoning, critical thinking, analytical writing skills, and quantitative reasoning. The syllabus is broadly divided into three sections – Analytical Writing, Quantitative reasoning, and Verbal Reasoning.

The Quantitative Reasoning section of the GRE Revised General Test allows students to use a calculator while solving various computations. However, you will only be allowed to use the calculator provided by the testing center.

The GRE takes approximately 3 hours and 45 minutes to complete. The Analytical Writing and Verbal sections each take 1 hour to complete; the Quantitative Reasoning Section takes 1 hour and 10 minutes to complete; and timing varies for the Unscored and Research Sections.

The content in these areas includes high school mathematics and statistics at a level that is generally no higher than a second course in algebra. It doesn't include trigonometry, calculus or other higher-level mathematics.
