The GRE consists of three sections: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. Each section is scored separately, and scores range from 130 to 170 for the Verbal and Quantitative sections, and 0 to 6 for the Analytical Writing section.
The GRE exam is required by most top universities in the US to study the MS program. For other universities it might be optional but usually preferred as an additional add-on to make your profile stand out from the crowd.
The GRE exam syllabus measures verbal reasoning, critical thinking, analytical writing skills, and quantitative reasoning. The syllabus is broadly divided into three sections – Analytical Writing, Quantitative reasoning, and Verbal Reasoning.
The Quantitative Reasoning section of the GRE Revised General Test allows students to use a calculator while solving various computations. However, you will only be allowed to use the calculator provided by the testing center.
The GRE takes approximately 3 hours and 45 minutes to complete. The Analytical Writing and Verbal sections each take 1 hour to complete; the Quantitative Reasoning Section takes 1 hour and 10 minutes to complete; and timing varies for the Unscored and Research Sections.
The content in these areas includes high school mathematics and statistics at a level that is generally no higher than a second course in algebra. It doesn't include trigonometry, calculus or other higher-level mathematics.
