IELTS tests four language skills:
The total test time is approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes.
1. Listening — 30 Minutes (+ 10 minutes transfer time for paper-based)
The Listening section consists of 4 sections and 40 questions. You will listen to a range of recordings — conversations, monologues, and academic discussions — and answer questions based on what you hear.
Question types: Multiple choice, matching, plan/map/diagram labelling, form/note/table/flow-chart completion, sentence completion
Each correct answer = 1 mark. Raw score converted to IELTS band (0–9).
2. Reading — 60 Minutes
The Reading section contains 3 passages and 40 questions. Texts are taken from books, journals, newspapers, and magazines (Academic) or from notices, advertisements, workplace materials, and books (General Training).
Question types: Multiple choice, identifying information (True/False/Not Given), matching headings, matching features, sentence completion, short answer questions
Skills tested: Skimming, scanning, understanding main ideas, comprehending detailed arguments
3. Writing — 60 Minutes
The Writing section has two tasks, both of which must be completed within 60 minutes.
Task 2 carries more weight than Task 1.
Writing is assessed on: Task Achievement / Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy
4. Speaking — 11 to 14 Minutes
The Speaking test is a face-to-face interview or on virtual mode with a certified IELTS examiner. It is conducted on the same day as the written test or within 7 days.
The Speaking test has 3 parts:
| Part 1 — Introduction & Interview | General questions about yourself, your home, your family, studies, work, and interests | 4–5 minutes |
| Part 2 — Individual Long Turn | You receive a task card with a topic. You have 1 minute to prepare, then speak for 1–2 minutes | 3–4 minutes |
| Part 3 — Two-Way Discussion | In-depth discussion related to the Part 2 topic — more abstract, analytical questions | 4–5 minutes |
Speaking is assessed on: Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, Pronunciation
IELTS uses a 9-band scoring system to measure your English proficiency
How is the Overall Band Score Calculated?
Overall Band Score = Average of (Listening + Reading + Writing + Speaking) ÷ 4, rounded to the nearest whole or half band.
Example: Listening 7.0 + Reading 6.5 + Writing 6.0 + Speaking 7.0 = 26.5 ÷ 4 = 6.625 → Rounded to Overall Band 6.5
